Bobby Keys and The Suffering Bastards

bobby keys carolina mixerHave you ever listened to a song like Dion's "The Wanderer" and said "that sax player ROCKS!"? Or maybe rode down the highway with the stereo blasting "Brown Sugar" by the Rolling Stones. Maybe it was John Lennon, Joe Cocker, Sheryl Crow, or BB King with an incredible sax solo driving you to put your foot on the gas just a little bit more.

If so, there is a good chance that you were listening to the talented Bobby Keys. Bobby has played on hundreds of songs since he began touring at the age of 14 with Buddy Holly. He is probably best known as the sax player for The Rolling Stones, and as Keith Richards' best friend.

Carolina Mixer caught Bobby Keys performing with his band, "The Suffering Bastards", on the Rock Legends Cruise II. The band itself is made up of legends in their own right, including Dan Baird (Georgia Satellites), Robert Kearns (Sheryl Crow), Steve Gorman (Black Crowes), Michael Webb (John Fogerty, Poco) and Chark Kinsolving (Mike Farris, Spoonful).

Paul Rodgers - Rock Legends Cruise II

paul rodgers carolinamixerPaul Rodgers has amassed an incredible track record of hits since 1968, both as a solo artist and as a member of bands such as Free, Bad Company, and The Firm. In the process he has written and performed with the best of the best in the music world.

Recently, Carolina Mixer had the opportunity to see Paul Rodgers perform and capture some live shots during his performance on the Rock Legends Cruise II. It was a major treat.

We all have have anticipated seeing a live performance of one of our music heroes, only to discover that the rock star of our memories was out of their element, and just didn't have it anymore. In Paul Rodgers case, that was DEFINITELY NOT the case. Paul came out and rocked it like it was the 1970's all over again. A true Rock Star, he sang each song flawlessly, was backed by an incredibly tight band, and put on a visual show as well with his flair for working the stage and the crowd. By far one of the best live performances I have ever seen.

Please enjoy some of the photos captured by Mother Shutter during the show, and do yourself a favor and be sure to check out Paul Rodgers in concert, should you get the opportunity.

Artimus Pyle Band - Rock Legends Cruise II

For the 2013 edition of the Rock Legends Cruise, Carolina Mixer joined the Artimus Pyle Band on the trip to capture their performances in photos and videos. So Brian Kelly Multimedia and Mother Shutter Photography loaded all our gear and headed to Ft. Lauderdale to join the band for a fun filled adventure to Labadee, Haiti and back.

Below are some of the photos and videos from the trip. Artimus and the boys put on 3 incredible shows, which included special guest appearances on several songs by Bob Burns, drummer on many of the songs that you know and love by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Robert Kearns, bass player for Sheryl Crow, on a few as well.

Marshall Tucker Band

Doug Gray - Marshall Tucker BandIn the early 60's, the seeds were planted for what would become one of the most iconic bands in history. The Marshall Tucker Band founding members Toy and Tommy Caldwell, Doug Gray, Franklin Wilkie, Jerry Eubanks, and George McCorkle were playing in the music scene around Spartanburg SC, the "home base" for MTB, in bands such as "The Toy Factory" (named after Toy Caldwell).

All of them young men, their aspirations were put on hold when several of them were called into service in Vietnam, including Toy, who suffered injuries while there.

After serving their duty, the deployed musicians returned home, and resumed performing as the Toy Factory in the bars around Spartanburg, often opening for established acts, including the Allman Brothers.
